Mobility Assistive Equipment Not Reasonable and Necessary

Based on Medicare's algorithm and your answers to the previous questions, Medicare does not consider any mobility device to be reasonable and necessary and would deny coverage for this patient.  Please keep in mind the following general requirements.

  • Medicare will not cover any device if a lesser device will satisfy the criteria  eg. A scooter will be denied as not reasonable and necessary if the patient is able to use a walker

  • The patient's need for mobility equipment must be for in home use

  • The patient must be able to safely operate the mobility device

  • The patient must be willing to use the mobility device

  • The patient's home must accommodate the device
